What is Oilzum?

F.W. White and H.P. Bagley established White & Bagley Company in 1888 located in Worcester Massachusetts. They wanted to develop a practical motor oil of uniform quality with a long service life and good protective properties. In 1905 they developed Oilzum, one of the first brand name motor oils! After drivers using Oilzum won several Indy 500 races and broke land speed records, Oilzum’s new marketing tag line became “The Choice of Champions”. Decades after White and Bagley’s success, Oilzum was purchased by the Dryden Oil Company in 1970. Two decades later, Dryden was bought by BP-Castrol and the Oilzum brand was lost. That was until 2007 when Dennison Lubricants purchased the Worcester warehouse and the Oilzum brand with it! Since Dennison Lubricants purchased the Oilzum name, they have proudly expanded the Oilzum product line beyond just Motor Oil. In 2018 Dennison Lubricants offers Oilzum products for Engine Oils, Transmission Fluids, Gear Oils, Tractor Fluids, Hydraulic Oils, Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Solvents, and Industrial Lubricants. What is CK-4?

In order to cut down on emissions nationwide, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and major engine manufacturers set new aggressive emission goals for heavy-duty vehicles. In order to reach these goals a new generation of oil needed to be created.  Oil technology and engine technology are mutually exclusive. When new emissions standards are set, engine manufacturers are challenged with the task to create cleaner, more fuel-efficient diesel engines. After the production of engines, they will need new higher performing engine oil in order to protect the machinery.  There are a few main differences between the old CJ-4 and new CK-4 standards outline below.  Shear Stability:  The new emissions standards call for improvements in shear stability versus CJ-4 oils. Oxidation Stability: Oxidation is the primary cause of oil breakdown and is caused by high engine temperatures. The next generation of engines are being designed to run hotter. New standards call for improved oxidation stability vesus CJ-4 Oils.    Check out some of these resources below for more information on the CK-4 API standard.
