AeroShell W100 Plus

Your engine is the heart beat of your plane, so it’s important to use the best quality engine oil to keep it running smoothly. That’s why pilots around the globe choose AeroShell W100 plus.

AeroShell W100 Plus is built specifically for pilots that want a single grade that provides top level protection and performance. Its single grade viscosity means exceptional heat protection, especially in the summer months. AeroShell W100 Plus contains the same ashless dispersant performance found in AeroShell W100, and also contains the anti-wear/anti-corrosion technology of the AeroShell Oil W 15w50. This technology helps mitigate harmful deposits of metallic ash in combustion chambers, and also works against corrosion and wear. Something, no other single grade piston engine oil can do. But how exactly does this technology work? Let’s take a closer look.

Technology

Metals like copper are typically an issue for oil because it causes it to degrade faster than normal. This is a major issue for pilots because a significant amount of general aviation engines contain copper. The largest area covered is usually the cam shafts, which is left over from the manufacturing process. When Cam shafts are manufactured the face is typically hardened using a process called Nitriding. This leaves a hard, brittle surface, this is perfect for the cam face, but not for the rest of the shaft.

In order to protect the rest of the shaft manufacturers apply a thin layer of Copper plating to all the areas which do not need to be hardened. Once the cam has been manufactured, this copper layer serves no functional purpose but is left on the shaft by the manufacture. This is a problem for the oil in the engine because copper will act as a catalyst and degrade the oil quickly. This is where the Metal Passivator technology comes into play. The Metal Passivator additive reacts with the surface of the copper components forming a protective layer on it. This keeps the oil from making contact with the copper, thus preserving its life expectancy.
