What Is DEF?
DEF is a liquid solution made of urea and de-ionized water. In short, DEF’s purpose is to break down harmful diesel emissions into water & nitrogen through a process called selective catalytic reduction.
WHAT IS SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR)?
DEF works through a process called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). This process uses a catalyst system in order to reduce the amount of harmful nitrogen oxide emissions that a diesel engine creates. In detail, the SCR passes the diesel exhaust fluid through the exhaust stream, a catalyst then converts the DEF into ammonia, the ammonia then breaks down the harmful diesel emissions into nitrogen and water.
